My grandma made them when she was a girl, and now, they've made a comeback!

Basic instructions on making a Yo-Yo.

1)Cut out a circle of fabric.
2)Make large running stitches around the edge of the circle, leaving a tail of thread on both ends.
3)Pull the tread to gather (make sure the main side of the fabric ends up on the outside).
4)Knot your thread ends together.
5)flatten
If you want to make them look a little more finished, while you're making your running stitches (or before) hem the edge of the circle in.

Well, now you can make them, but what in the world are you going to do with them?!

Here are some ideas:

Christmas Tree:
Make circle templates of 1 -3/4", 2-12", 3-1/2" and 4-1/2".  Use fabric of choice.  For one tree, make two of each size.  Make the yo-yo's according to the above instructions.  Then assemble small to big by running heavy thread through the center.    You can add a star or box on top and a small wooden spool for the trunk.

Angel:
Follow the instructions for the tree.  Use a 3/4" round bead for the head and a ribbon bow for the wings.  Add hair (fake hair, or yarn) and a halo (piece of gold wire or a pipe cleaner).

Santa:

Make a large red yo-yo.  Glue a piece of tan felt on for the face, add wiggly eyes, some white felt around the face and a white pom pom.

Bunny:

Make a large white yo-yo.  Glue two white pom poms and a pink pom pom on in the middle (for nose and cheeks).  Add wiggly eyes and wiskers (heavy thread or embroidery floss).  Cut ears out of felt or fun foam.

Candy cane:
Make a bunch of Yo-yo's and string them on wire, but punching a hole in the middle of the yo-yo with the wire or a pair of scissors.  Once you've got a bunch on the wire (pack them kind of tight and glue the first and last ones on with hot glue), bend the wire into the shape of a candy cane.

Wreath:
Follow the instructions for the candy cane, only you can twist the two ends of the wire together rather than gluing the yo-yo's to it. Add ribbon bows and a loop to hang it from.

Motifs:

From quilt tops to applique's the uses for yo-yos are endless.  Here are a few ideas:

For Quilt tops, or pillows.

Flower                 Tree                             Balloons

For appliques to be sewn on shirts, bags, pillows, towels, etc.
