Crafts With Cans

Snowman Birdfeeder

Fasten three large (number 10) cans together (if you have an idea on how to easily fasten them together, let me know).  Paint them white.  Fasten a pie pan on top.  Then, take another coffee can and punch holes with a church key around the BOTTOM edge of the can.  Fasten it to the pie pan and paint them both black.  Add a scrap of fabric for a scarf, sticks for arms and paint on a face and buttons.  To use, fill the 'hat' with bird seed and make sure it comes out into the pie pan.  Make sure to put a lid on the top coffee can.

Cookie Jar

Paint the outside of the can with whatever you want (can be for a particular holiday or for anytime).  You can even paint the lid.  Then fill with goodies.  This works well, when taking cookies to work or a function, that way, you aren't out a whole lot if you forget it.

Snowman Can

Take a can (doesn't matter what size).  Cut out a circle of felt or fun foam that is larger than the can.  Cut the middle of the circle out so it will fit down over the can.  Paint above the circle black, and below white.  Put whatever you want in the can, or leave it empty.

Luminaries

Fill your can with water.  Freeze it.  Once it's frozen, take a hammer and something sharp (like a nail) and poke holes in the can by pounding the nail into the can.  The ice supports the can and keeps it from collapsing.  If you want to, you could use a permanent marker to mark your pattern before you fill the can with water.

Candle holder

Use the tin punch method above.  Make decorative edges along the top edge by cutting the can with tin snips.  Be careful the edges will be sharp.  I know there's a way to dull these edges a bit so they aren't so sharp (sand paper?), but I can't remember.  If you know of a way, email me please.

Pin Cushion

This works well with tuna cans or small petfood cans.  Fill the can with fiber fill.    Glue a circle of fabric (that's larger than the opening in the can) over the opening (it's best if you glue it inside the can).  Paint the outside of the can or cover it with contact paper, or more fabric.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

Not really a craft, but we all gotta eat right? :)  Take several tuna cans (cleaned).  In the bottom of each can, place a ring of pineapple.  Mix up a yellow cake mix and fill each can half way.  Cover with aluminum foil and place in the camp fire coals until done.
